Projects of SSCOBA
The OBA (a non-profit making body) has identified some important priority projects by September 2004 and the intention was to complete the majority of the projects by year 2009, where the school celebrate its centenary.
However due to Tsunami situation (ref. Special web page) on 26th December 2004, some of the identified projects required changes in view of the proposed relocation of the school. Subsequent to the Government decision to move the school to a safe location, the Japanese Government agreed for the funding of the re-construction of the school with many enhanced and updated facilities at a land extending approx. 7 acres belongs to Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Defence at Horana Road, Wekada, Panadura (about 500m from the Panadura city centre and 700m of aerial distance form the former Sumangala College premises at Nalluruwa, Panadura).
It needs your fullest co-operation and assistance in any form to make the projects initiated by the OBA a reality. This request is made in the backdrop of restricted government funding to the school where students are facing many hardships due to inadequate facilities and a proper environment for their studies.
For the OBA alone, it is considered an uphill task and it is you who can brighten up the lives of the over 3000 student population and to make their childhood meaningful and most importantly to groom them as valuable citizens in Sri Lanka in shaping our country for a better future.
The major projects initiated by the OBA are as follows;
- A swimming pool has been proposed as an additional feature with a cost of Rs 6.5 (USD 65,000.00). Former Lions Governor & Old Boy Deshabimannya Rohantha De Fonseka has already agreed to meet the cost of the swimming pool and the construction works is due to be commenced shortly. The OBA has to find funds for the construction of the Changing Rooms (approx. cost Rs. 3.0 million), viewing galleries (approx. Rs. 2.5 million).
- In addition it has been proposed to construct a shopping complex and a multi functional hall facing the Horana – Panadura Road (approx. cost Rs. 8 million) which is to be leased out to meet the operational costs of the pool in order to offer the use of the pool to students of Sri Sumangala & neighboring schools at a nominal rate.
- A motor vehicle capable of transporting about fifteen to twenty students is another necessity for the Alma Mater. It is very useful for many of our students when they engaged in extra – curricular activities. The cost of the vehicle is Rs. 2,500,000.00 (USD 25,000.00).
- Establishment of Rs. 10 million Building Maintenance Fund – This is considered as an important project in order to help our Alma Mater to upkeep and maintain the new building facilities due to acquire on completion of the construction of proposed new school by the Government of Japan.
We appeal to a large number of Old Boys of our Alma Mater spread around the world, affluent enough to be beneficent towards their Alma Mater and also to many well wishers and philanthropists to participate in our above mentioned school development programmes.
We need your help and assistance. We also welcome you to visit our beautiful country and to our school and see for yourself what it needs and what you could do to fulfil the needs.
Also there are many ways you can help in reviewing the school. Please write to us, whether you are an Old Boy or a well wisher. We would always welcome your inquiries.
We need your financial other forms of contributions possible for various projects in addition to the "special projects" identified by the OBA for the benefit our students.
